Estudou-se o efeito de três manejos do lençol freático na indução de adaptações fisiomorfológicas do cultivar Bat 477 de feijão (Phaseolus vulgaris, L.) à hipoxia, com vistas em caracterizar a influência relativa dos principais fatores físicos, químicos e biológicos interferentes. O experimento foi realizado em campo, na ESALQ/USP, Piracicaba (SP), de março a junho de 1999, utilizando-se caixas de cimento amianto de 1.000 L como unidade experimental no delineamento de parcelas inteiramente ao acaso, com quatro tratamentos e cinco repetições. As caixas receberam estrutura própria de manejo e controle do lençol freático. Simulou-se ao máximo um meio físico/condição natural de uma várzea. Após a indução no período vegetativo, a eficiência dos manejos foi testada pela inundação temporária do solo no fim do florescimento/formação de vagens. Houve um efetivo processo de nodulação das raízes, a despeito da condição de alta saturação do solo. As características biométricas de crescimento, embora acusando prejuízo da hipoxia, evidenciaram a utilização pela planta de mecanismos adaptativos morfológicos (raízes adventícias e lenticelas), biológicos (fixação de N) e fisiomorfológicos (resistividade estomática e transpiração). Já as características biométricas de colheita evidenciaram que tanto o manejo do lençol mantido a 15 cm como o de elevação gradativa, embora com rendimento de grãos sem vantagem estatística sobre o manejo não-indutivo, foram efetivos, permitindo a planta completar seu ciclo, além de menor comprometimento na qualidade de grãos. A alternância de vantagens relativas biométricas entre os dois manejos não acarretou diferença estatística no rendimento de grãos, levando-se a inferir ser vantajoso o uso de cultivares de ciclo mais longo nesse tipo de condição.

The effect of three water table management systems on the physical-morphological adaptation of snap beans (Phaseolus vulgaris, L. ), cv. BAT 477 to flooding tolerance was studied and the relative influence of the main physical, chemical and biological interfering factors discussed. The trial was conducted at ESALQ/USP, Piracicaba (SP) Brazil, from March to June, 1999, under maximal simulation of natural low land conditions. A 1.000 L concrete box was used as plot, under a completely randomized design, with four treatments and five replications. After induction at vegetative growth stage, management efficiency was tested by a short-term waterlogging event at a reproductive stage. The biometric characteristics of growth, although displaying damage caused by hypoxia, showed the plant used morphological (adventitious roots and lenticels), as well as biological (N fixation) and physical-morphological (diffusion resistance and transpiration) adaptive mechanisms. On the other hand, the yield biometric characteristics showed that the water table maintained at 15 cm, as well as the gradual elevation, although without any significant yield difference in relation to no inductive management, were effective, allowing the plant to complete its phenological cycle, resulting in better grain quality. Alternating relative biometric advantages between the two management systems caused difference in yield, suggesting that the use of longer-cycle cultivars under hypoxia is more advantageous.

O crescimento do sistema radicular do feijoeiro irrigado, cultivar IAC-Carioca, sob pivô central, em rotação com pousio, milho, aveia preta, Crotalaria juncea L., guandu (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) e mucuna preta (Mucuna aterrima), no período não-convencional de cultivo no outono-inverno, foi avaliado de 1993 a 1995, em Latossolo Vermelho eutroférrico típico, em área experimental do Instituto Agronômico, em Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo. A rotação de culturas do feijoeiro com milho e adubos verdes favoreceu a redução da resistência do solo à penetração na camada arável, garantiu a manutenção do teor de matéria orgânica do solo, bem como possibilitou a redução da acidez e o aumento do índice de saturação por bases (V%) em profundidade em relação ao teor inicial. A velocidade de infiltração básica da água no solo foi favorecida pela inclusão da mucuna preta, da Crotalaria juncea L. e do milho, no esquema de rotações. A profundidade efetiva observada do seu sistema radicular foi de 0,35 a 0,40 m.

Root system growth of the common bean, variety IAC-Carioca, under center pivot irrigation in rotation with fallow; corn; black oat; sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.); pigeon pea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] and velvet bean (Mucuna aterrima) was evaluated during a non-conventional (Autumn - Winter) cultivation period, from 1993 to 1995, on a typic Haplorthox soil, at an experimental area of the Instituto Agronômico, in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil. The crop sequences of common bean with corn and green manure reduced the soil resistance to penetration into the ploughed layer; maintained the normal contents of the soil organic matter; reduced acidity and increased the base saturation index in depth, in relation to the initial content. The basic infiltration rate was increased with the inclusion of velvet bean, sunn hemp and corn in the crop sequence. Effective root depth (80% of the total) was around 0.35 to 0.40 m.

Atributos do clima, solo e manejo foram caracterizados em 10 lavouras comerciais de café, estabelecidas na região oeste do estado de São Paulo, nos municípios de Sagres, Pompéia, Iacri, Bastos, Herculândia, Marília, Vera Cruz, Garça e Gália. Os objetivos foram identificar os principais fatores limitantes à cultura e estabelecer um modelo multivariado simples para explicar as produções observadas entre 1984 e 1989. Foram analisados, por correlação simples, mais de 2.000 atributos em relação às produções finais. Os atributos que apresentaram significância a 5% de probalidade pelo teste t de Student foram combinados em sucessivas análises de regressão múltipla. Três equações, com quatorze, cinco e seis variáveis preditoras, foram selecionadas, com graus de explicação da produção observada da ordem de 77, 73 e 75%, respectivamente. Quatro variáveis foram comuns aos três modelos: produção do ano anterior, idade da lavoura, temperatura mínima absoluta média na época do abotoamento e florescimento e soma dos teores de silte e argila nos horizontes subsuperficiais. Outras variáveis selecionadas foram: precipitação na época do abotoamento e florescimento; precipitação na época da maturação e colheita; densidade do solo e água disponível junto à cova (camada de 20-40 cm); macroporosidade na rodagem de máquinas (camada de 0-20 cm); adubação nitrogenada; pH em água e fósforo, ambos na área adubada (camada de 20-40 cm); teor de cálcio trocável e relação Mg:K trocáveis, ambos na área adubada (camada de 0-20 cm). A análise dos dados de produção no período de seis anos mostrou que as lavouras encontravam-se em processo de depauperamento, com declínio da produtividade da ordem de 400 kg ha-1 ano-1. As áreas necessitavam de melhoria da calagem, fosfatagem em profundidade, restabelecimento dos níveis de magnésio no solo e adubação mineral equilibrada. Também ficou evidenciada a necessidade de ser evitada a instalação da lavoura em áreas de acúmulo de ar frio no inverno ou solos com acentuado gradiente textural.

Attributes of soil, climate and crop management were characterized in ten growing coffee plantations in the western region of São Paulo State. The purpose of this work was to identify the main limiting productivity factors and develop a simple multivariate model to explain observed yield in the period between 1984 and 1989. Over two thousand traits were initially analyzed by simple correlation to the final yield, and the significant ones, with at least 5% level according to the Student test t, were selected and combined in successive multiple regression analysis with the final yield. Three equations were selected following the described methodology, having fourteen, five and six independent variables, with explanation levels (or coefficients of determination) of 77, 73 and 75%, respectively. Four important variables were common to the three selected models: coffee yield in the preceding year, crop age, subsurface silt plus clay content and average of absolute minimum temperature during the bud development and flowering stages (July to September). Other selected variables were: rainfall during bud development and flowering stages, rainfall during maturation and harvest stages, soil density and available water close to plants (layer 20-40 cm), macroporosity in the machine wheel track (layer 0-20 cm), nitrogen fertilizer, pH and phosphorus in fertilized area (layer 20-40 cm), exchangeable calcium content and Mg:K exchangeable ratio in fertilized area (layer 0-20 cm). A general analysis of six years of coffee production indicated a steady annual reduction in yield, at the rate of 400 kg per hectare per year. The results emphasize the need to improve liming, deep phosphate application, restore magnesium content to acceptable levels and a more balanced fertilization practice. The models also indicated the importance of choosing adequate planting areas. Places prone to cold air accumulation during the winter or soil profiles with high textural gradient should be avoided for coffee production.

Foram estudados em casa de vegetação o tempo de sobre vivência de oito espécies olerícolas a aplicação de atrazina nas doses correspondentes a 1,8 e 3,2 kg/ha, e de diuron nas doses de 1,2 e 2,0 kg/ ha, em três tipos de solos ácidos tropicais. Os resultados mostraram alta correlação linear entre o tempo médio de vida das plântulas com teores de matéria orgânica, capacidade de troca catiônica (CTC) efetiva e pH do solo; e baixas correlações com teores de argila mais silte. Os resultados indicam ser mais adequado tomar como base a característica CTC do solo em lugar da sua classificação textural para fins de recomendação das doses dos herbicidas.

A study was conducted in green house to determine the survival time of eight vegetable plant species to soil application of 1,8 and 3,2 kg/ha of atrazine, and 1,2 and 2,0 kg/ha of diuron, in three tropical soils. High line ar correlation was obtained betwe en avera ge survi val time and organic matter content, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and soil pH; and low correlation with clay or clay plus silt content. The results lead to the conclusion that it seems more consistent to consider CEC inste ad of soil texture on dosis recommendation fow both herbicides.
